Though still making a name for themselves in the United States and yet to be recognized by many boat buyers,  J&J Yacht Design is highly regarded as one of the premier cruising yacht designers in Europe. As part of the Seaway Group based in Bled, Slovinia, J&J is an integral component of this unique design, engineering and tooling company serving production and one-off sailboat builders worldwide. J&J has been the recipient of Boat of the Year awards in France, Germany and the US for 17 separate designs.

Established in 1983 by Jerej & Japec Jakopin, the design facility now boasts a staff of 189 employing some of the most sophisticated design and engineering software available. This staff, in addition to 60 technicians, has dedicated itself to being a full service partner in the production sailboat industry supplying design, computer manufactured tooling and prototype development to 28 boat builders in 14 countries. Their projects have ranged in size from 13 to 90 feet.

J&J has been instrumental in the development of the current Bavaria line by not only designing comfortable cruising yachts with above normal performance potential, but also by engineering each model so as to make it compatible with Bavaria’s high technology manufacturing facility, thus maximizing value while minimizing costs due to inefficiency and waste.

Their latest Bavaria project, the Match series, is a cooperative effort with Doug Peterson and designed to appeal to the more performance oriented segment of the market. Debuting in 2004, the 38 Match is the first of the original three-model series to arrive in the U.S.  The 38 Match will be followed by the 35 Match and the 42 Match.

Earlier design data:

In 1978 the new Bavaria 808 and Bavaria 707 were designed by Kurt W. Schroter, Travenunde. Designer Axel Mohnhaupt of Berlin drew the lines from 1981 (Bavaria 770) until 1992 (Bavaria 51).

J&J Design took over Hohnhaupt's task and started a furious debut with the Bavaria 44 in 1993. In 1999 they designed the Bavaria 51.
