The Catalina 30 was introduced in the early 1970’s and by 1987 there were 5,000 hulls built. Just 3 years later they reached 6,000 boats and that was an industry record with new keel boat production.  It was a trend-setting design with immediate sales success and the boat won its class in the Newport to Ensenada Race. Considered one of the largest 30-footers on the market, it has appeal for those looking for a large, comfortable interior for cruising and spending nights on board. The hull is hand-laid solid fiberglass with reinforcement in high load areas.  The keel is lead and bolted to the hull with SS bolts.  The spade rudder has a small skeg. Deck stanchions are closer than usual and the lifelines are double. The masthead rig is stepped on deck with a compression column supporting it below decks. This boat has the tall rig, which enhances performance in lighter conditions as the original rig was considered slightly under powered.  Despite the tall rig, the boat is very stiff and stable and because of this, headsail changes will not be as frequent. The interior is roomy and quite laid out and the galley design is unusually good. The forward cabin has a large double berth with insert. The head is quite comfortable with good storage space with a hanging locker and drawers. The interior has an abundance of teak and so the boat is stunning below.  The main cabin is large. There is an L-shaped settee to port and a straight settee to starboard. The table folds up on the bulkhead when not in use. Under the cockpit to starboard there is a large double quarter berth.  The inboard has good accessibility. The U-shaped galley to port is large with double SS sinks. Storage space in the galley is plentiful.
