Designed by Robert Perry, the Tayana 37 is perhaps the most successful custom cruising yacht to be built and it was built in response to the very popular Westsail 32. The boat is still in production nearing 600 hulls. Tayanas are solidly built and can be found almost anywhere in the world. First known as the CT 37 in 1975, the boat was offered semi-custom with many internal options and layouts. You could buy a cutter or a ketch. In 1979 the name was changed to the Tayana 37 which was an offshoot of the Ta Yang Yacht Building name – considered to be one of the higher quality Taiwan boat builders. The design is that of a classic full keel double-ender. Perry took the traditional Atkins 1930 design and designed in his boat speed magic by cutting away the forefoot of the keel, which reduced wetted surface and gained mobility.  Then he modified the keel/hull comparison which helped close winded sailing and form stability. Then he incorporated the canoe stern that he used on the ever popular Valiant 40 that he also designed and brought the rudder inboard. More cutters were built than ketches and Perry always thought that was a pity because the ketches were particularly fast and well balanced in comparison. The decks have teak and are wide and Ta Yang later redesigned the deck which Perry though was far nicer, more aesthetic with a nicer cockpit. The cockpit was designed to deal with large seas and is safe and secure with high coamings. Below is a high quality interior that has been touted as some of the best boatbuilding craftsmanship out of Taiwan. Sleeping capacity is 6. Probably no two Tayana 37’s are alike due to different interior preferences.  This one has the forward cabin enclosed which is definitely preferred by the current owners who looked a long time at similar designs and even other Tayana 37’s (like maybe all of them) and they chose this vessel over any other .  Perry has reported that there has never been any structural problems with the boat.  One owner writes of “surfing down 20 footers doing 14 knots and the waves were breaking about 3 feet of white water on the top and they never took a drop in the cockpit”.  The inboard was rebuilt in 1997.
